Philosopher Bertrand Russell once wrote:
“‘Religion is based … mainly upon fear … fear of the mysterious, fear of defeat, fear of death. Fear is the parent of cruelty, and therefore it is no wonder if cruelty and religion have gone hand in hand … . My own view on religion is that of Lucretius. I regard it as a disease born of fear and as a source of untold misery to the human race.’”
Most people do not base their beliefs on more than what they want to believe. The majority of religious followers are not aware of the foundations on which their religion is built, but more on what they would like to believe. This way of thinking, in itself, can lead an altered perception of reality. Things like schizophrenia can already be present and triggered by things like fear and expressed through hallucinations, including ‘voices’.
Early cases of mental illness were often misconstrued as things like possession and witchcraft. People who suffered from such things were often shunned, but who is to say that the original ‘prophets’ were not suffering from the same condition? The only differences between witches and prophets was the messages they were preaching. The people heard what they wanted from some, and when hearing something they didn’t like, considered it blasphemy and witchcraft. There was no proof or reason for any religion that has started aside from word of mouth from prophets and preachers. The only question is really just where their information came from, a higher power or mental disease?
